SES01 Efficiency and Sustainability

About this course

This course addresses efficiency and sustainability in school environments. It equips participants with the awareness, knowledge and skills that can be used to understand infrastructure efficiency and sustainability at schools including new technologies and the effective management of space, energy, water and waste. Processes and tools such as assessments, benchmarking, management and new technologies that can be used to improve performance are introduced. A fully interactive programme tailored to meet the audience’s requirements at basic, intermediate, and advanced levels.

What this course offers

The course will introduce you to the key operations and sustainability concepts and provide methods and tools that can improve efficiencies and education outcomes.

What you will learn

The course covers the following topics.

1. Space

Spaces in buildings need to be managed to support the achievement of education outcomes. Managing space efficiently ensures that the right spaces and facilities are available at the right time and that resources are not wasted.

2. Energy

In many buildings, it is possible to achieve 30% reductions in energy consumption through improved management. Controls and technologies can be used to improve reductions further. Energy assessments, benchmarking, effective operational procedures and increased awareness can be used to improve and maintain energy efficiency at schools.

2. Water and Sanitation

In many areas, water is an increasingly scarce and expensive commodity and supplies may be unreliable. Improving water efficiency and alternative water supplies, such as rainwater harvesting, can be used to reduce costs and improve the resilience of schools. Water assessments, benchmarking, increased awareness and operational procedures can be used to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

4. Waste

Disposing of waste in landfill or onsite results in the loss of valuable space and resources. Avoiding waste and increasing recycling enables cost savings, healthier environments and more efficient resource use. Effective management and alternative approaches, such as those based on the circular economy, can be used to reduce waste and related costs at schools and improve the environment.
