Schools are complex organisations to manage. Large numbers of learners and educators have to be coordinated, learning and teaching activities prepared and implemented and successful education outcomes achieved within defined timeframes and resources.
Well-managed, appropriate school infrastructure has an important role in enabling required school activities to happen. School infrastructure policies can be used to help ensure that infrastructure is available, and can be used safely and flexibly, to support education outcomes.
School infrastructure policies set out how school infrastructure, and aspects of activities that happen within schools, should be managed. Policies define key principles that should be followed with additional detail provided in procedures. Procedures list activities or sequences of activities that ensure key policy principles are met. By defining explicitly what is required and providing guidance on how activities should be carried out, policies and procedures can be used to standardise and integrate good practice within schools.
Common school infrastructure policies, or school policies that cover infrastructure include:
- Health and safety policy
- Teaching and learning environment policy
- Inclusive education policy
- Maintenance policy
- Procurement and contract management policy
- Infrastructure development policy
