School Infrastructure Norms and Standards

The Department of Basic Education in South Africa provides guidance on school space, equipment and services. These set out minimum standards that should be achieved and aim to ensure that facilities support high-quality education and are safe and accessible. Minimum standards are set for:

  • Universal access
  • Classrooms
  • Sports
  • Labs
  • Libraries
  • Security
  • Water
  • Sanitation
  • Energy
  • Communication

These standards can be found in the Regulations Related to Minimum Norms and Standards for Public School Infrastructure and in Guidelines Relating to Planning for Public School Infrastructure.

Understanding minimum standards for school infrastructure and assessing these in schools is covered in the STE Teaching and Learning Environments Course
