Benefits of Energy Efficiency in Schools

There are many benefits for schools of being more energy efficient. Some examples are outlined below:

  • Operating costs: Energy efficiency can achieve significant operation cost savings.
  • Loadshedding: Reduce pressure on Eskom and utility supplies.
  • Health and safety: Ensuring that equipment, such as heaters, are only on when required can improve health and safety.
  • Environmental impacts: Reduced energy consumption enables reduced environmental impacts such as lower carbon emissions.
  • Management: Metering and controls enable improved energy management and cost control capabilities at the school.
  • Planning: Improved metering, reporting and modelling enable better energy planning and strategies.
  • Accountability: Achieving high levels of energy efficiency can be used to demonstrate accountability and effective financial management and planning to funders such as parents, and governments.

Addressing energy efficiency in schools is covered in the following course: SES01 Efficiency and Sustainability.
